Wauneta Jacobsen

Wauneta Jacobsen, 82, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Paul, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare at Lakeview in Grand Island.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery at Dannebrog.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Mrs. Jacobsen was born July 20, 1920, in Grand Island to William and Ruth (Anderson) Metro Sr.

Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, James Sr., of St. Paul; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Ruthie Jacobsen of St. Paul; and a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gaylord Mickelsen of Grand Island.


Other survivors include six granddaughters and their husbands, Amanda and Marvin Peterson, Melissa and Paul Schwartz, Jenna and Will Byabato, Nita and Andy Sani, Kimberly and Jeff Shippen, and Cindy Spiehs, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Wauneta Jacobsen attended school in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1938.

Wauneta then worked at J. C. Penney's Store in Grand Island as a clerk. She also worked in office positions in Grand Island.

She was united in marriage to James P. Jacobsen Sr. on March 24, 1940, in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Dannebrog, where her husband operated Jacobsen Grocery and Jacobsen Funeral Home.

The couple moved in 1959 to St. Paul, where they operated McIntyre-Jacobsen Funeral Home. The funeral home later became Jacobsen Funeral Home, which the couple operated until their retirement in 1982. The couple then moved to Grand Island, where she lived for the rest of her life.

She enjoyed family gatherings, traveling with her husband to Minnesota to fish and to Texas, where they would spend winters. She was a collector of porcelain dolls, did needlework and crocheting.

Her main concern was the welfare of her family.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul; a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors of America and the Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Darlene Klein; and one brother, Bill Metro Jr.
