Harley Nelson

Harley L. Nelson, 64, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Internment will be in the columbarium at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7, at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Harley was born Aug. 25, 1939, at Ellinwood, Kan., to Milford H. and Winifred V. (Thiel) Nelson.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Peggy Nelson; a son and daughter-in-law, Shannon and Carrie Leimser of Grand Island; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Tami Nelson of Forest City, Iowa, Crystal and Daniel Milburn of Columbus, and Tandra and Tim Vega of Burwell; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sandra Brown of Centerfield, Utah, and Katy and Loyd Miles of Rolling Meadows, Ill.

Other survivors include seven grandchildren, Ryan Nelson, Kayla Kracht, Dustin Leimser, Racquel Hamilton, Danielle Jo Milburn, Alexis Milburn, and Devon Leimser.

The family relocated to Idaho, where he attended grade school. They then moved to Grand Island, where he attended Walnut Junior High School, and then to Dannebrog, where he attended 10th, 11th and 12th grades and graduated in 1958.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from July 14, 1958, until July 3, 1964. After his discharge he returned to Illinois and worked in the flooring business with his father.

He then attended Southern Illinois University, receiving his Mechanical Drafting Degree. In the mid-1970s he moved to Grand Island, where he worked construction and was employed by Hoppe Lumber, now known as Mead Lumber Co. He retired in 1988.

He was united in marriage to Peggy Ann Leimser on May 5, 1990, in Grand Island, after which they made they home in Grand Island.

He had a lifelong love for woodworking. He also enjoyed camping and fishing and was an avid sportsman participating in baseball, softball, bowling and rugby. He took great joy in attending his grandchildren's events.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bruce and Jerry Nelson.
